The Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Child. It is focused on raising public awareness of the needs of young children and the services and programs available in each community to support families.
South Texas College’s Starr County Campus community has come together with community partners to host a Week of the Young Child Children’s Play Day at its campus located at 142 FM 3167 in Rio Grande City on Saturday, April 9, 2011 from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Parents are encouraged to bring children ages one to 10 years old to enjoy free food, fun, games and entertainment. Admission is free and open to the public
A “Kids on Wheels Parade” will take place at 9:45 a.m. and children are invited to ride their bikes in the event. Participants must be lined up by 9:30 a.m. and be accompanied by an adult.
The South Texas Literacy Coalition will be on hand to pass out free children’s books at the college’s campus library. Additionally, there will be program information booths from community partners like Head Start and Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid.
The event is sponsored by South Texas’s College’s Starr County Campus community, the Hill Country Child Care Providers Association for Young Children, the Texas Migrant Council Head Start/Early Head Start, and the Teaching and Mentoring Communities Head Start/Early Head Start – Rio Grande Center.
